On Headlamps
Headlamps are better than torches & smartphones
I know you might say, why do I need a headlamp when I always carry a phone which has a flashlight. Or you might argue that torches are inexpensive. But headlamps (also sometimes called headtorches) keep your hand free which is very convienient while hiking especially in even slighly tricky terrain. (I will write about why keeping your hands free while hiking is a safer!)
Which headlamp to buy.
I'd say you should eventually invest in 2 headlamps, if you hike & trek even a few times a year. But maybe just start with a simple inexpensive one.
- A simple headlamp which accepts easily available AA or AAA alkaline cells.
- An angle adjustable headlamp. Choosing between a rechargeable one vs those which accept batteries is a personal choice.
Having an inexpensive one keeps you from worrying too much about cost when lending it to others in emergency situations.
Features you should look for in a headlamp
- Red light (save charge & eyes at night)
- Angle adjustable
- Decent run time
Recommendations
- 💰 Affordable & reliable. The inexpensive Decathlon one (HL50) is a good first headlamp. Takes 2 AAA cells. And it's pretty reliable. I'd say use it with Duracells for good brightness. You can't adjust the angle.
- 👍 Rechargeable & compact. Decathlon's FORCLAZ 100 lumen option is pretty good. I personally use this one at the moment.
- ⭐ Fenix HM62-T is probably one of the best most reliable headlamps out there. Highly recommended by a friend who uses it in all kinds of activities ranging from ice climbing to running. I also particularly like Fenix variants that support the standard 18650 Li-ion cells. So you could also carry multiple 18650 cells with you on a long trip.
- Notable. Energizer Vision Ultra is another great option. Takes 3 AAA cells and has white, red and green modes. angle adjustable.
