A lot of people often ask me how I find new locations.
And how I document trail information for a new hike.
So I am conducting a workshop to show you how.
What
- Finding new spots on Google Maps
- Looking for existing trails & gpx files
- Planning the hiking trail in absence of gpx files
- Follow-up field workshop (we will actually go out on foot; will be a separate event)

- Using readily available tools: GaiaGPS, gpx studio, Google Maps

When
- Wednesday, 24th July 2024
- Evening: 7:30 pm to 8:30 pm
Structure
- Start with a rough location on Google Maps
- Mark points of interest
- Find existing trails from other sources
- Mark a rough trail based on satellite imagery + contour lines
- Add waypoints
- Use gpx studio + GaiaGPS to have multiple trails in one file.
- Import a gpx into your navigation app
- [Optional; participants' call]: structure of gpx. not important to know this for our purpose. but is sometimes useful to fix issues with certain gpx files. (Can cover during part 3 in more detail)
- Follow-up: field workshop
- Follow-up: post processing (marking waypoints, gauging difficulty & planning subsequent visits )
